Interventional and Diagnostic RadiologY

A research-trained interventional radiologist. Built for complex cases, built for collaboration.

Dan Poulsen, MD, PhD

Expertise

Dual-board-certified and fellowship-trained, Dr. Poulsen practices within a hybrid IR/DR model — performing complex interventional procedures, including embolization and minimally invasive women's health care, guided by individualized clinical evaluation and diagnostic imaging across CT, MRI, and general radiology. His approach is informed by a background in cartilage biology and osteoarthritis, integrating disease-level understanding with image-guided therapy. This informs both his technical precision and clinical judgment.

Leadership

Dr. Poulsen has built and advised IR service lines within independent and hospital-based practice environments — working with executive leadership on referral pathway development, staffing, scheduling, and program sustainability. He served as Chief Resident at VCU Health System for two consecutive years and now leads Poulsen Medical.

Patient Care

His practice is built around thoughtful patient selection, longitudinal follow-through, and close communication with referring physicians across medical and surgical specialties. A particular focus on women's health and access-forward care models reflects a broader commitment to getting the right patients to the right intervention.

Education and Clinical Practice

Dr. Poulsen's path to private practice spans more than a decade of rigorous academic and clinical training across four institutions.

He completed doctoral research at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, focusing on the clinical evaluation of osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal disease, building on earlier graduate work in cartilage biology and joint physiology at the University at Buffalo, including published research in osteochondral transplantation models. He then earned his MD from SUNY Upstate Medical University, graduating with awards for excellence in radiology, surgery, and overall academic achievement. He subsequently entered one of the most demanding training pathways in the specialty: a six-year Integrated Interventional and Diagnostic Radiology residency at VCU Health System, where he served as Chief Resident for two consecutive years.

Today his practice reflects that full arc of preparation — combining complex interventional procedures, individualized diagnostic interpretation, and a longitudinal approach to patient care built on close collaboration with referring physicians.

Endorsements

“I’ve had the unique distinction of being a professional colleague of Dan Poulsen. From the outset, he was affable and made himself available to my team for collaboration on any critically injured patients who could benefit from his minimally-invasive interventions. Dr. Poulsen consistently provided outstanding care and follow-up for our mutual patients, and produced unparalleled successful outcomes with services that complemented the approach of our surgery team while improving the quality of life for the patients involved.  His skill set is definitely an asset to this community!”
